It's been a while since I've been on (basically doing one and a half times my full course load at uni), but just wanted to stop by and say — I've been published! You can check my piece out here: mascarareview.com/empty-by-bla…

One of those taggy things...

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 9, 2015, 7:28 PM
SilverInkblot tagged me in her journal (Survey Says -), and now I must answer some questions! And then tag people? I don't know about that, but I'll certainly answer the questions :D

1. What does your Deviantart name mean and why?

Well...it's my name. Without a space. And just because. (My original deviantART name was wordsmith94, and that was because I fancied myself a wordsmith, and was born in the year 1994, but one AnnMarieBone convinced me to use my real name as a way to gain recognition for myself, and even gave me a premium membership so that I could change it. I owe her a lot, actually.)

2. What fandom were you obsessed with when you joined and what are you into now?

I'm not really the obsessive kind. I enjoy a lot of TV shows, films and novels, but it would be hard for me to pick just one. I should probably work on a list or something, but off the top of my head, I like Buffy, My Mad Fat Diary, House, Glee and...oh, I don't know. A lot more.

3. How many watchers do you have now?

140 watchers. Not a lot compared to some, but then again, it's a lot compared to others. I'm just amazed that 140 people thought I was worth watching. You should say hi! I'm sorry I haven't been very active lately—just got a lot on my plate.

4. Name 3 of your favorite artists on DA.

As a writer, I'm going to name three of my favourite writers. In no particular order: SCFrankles, Entitaria and TheChesherCat. Ooh, and MWBlueWolf. And you should check out DailyLitRecognition for some awesome pieces. There are more, of course, but these are some people/groups worth checking out.

5. Or lack thereof, move along…

Don't know what this was meant to be, but okay.

6. Do you participate in clubs' contests here on dA?

Sometimes. Haven't in a while though, just because I've been so busy.

7. What is your most popular submission?

My most commented on (343 comments), favourited (388 favourites) and viewed (4,174 views) is

You should date a guy who writesDate a guy who writes. Date a guy whose fingers are stained with ink, whose pockets are filled with pens, and whose eyes smile and dance with curiosity. Date a guy who notices things like the colour of your hair and the way you have your coffee, not because he has to, but just because it’s a habit of his to notice things. Date a guy who can barely get around a computer, but is expert with his word processor. It doesn’t matter; he prefers pen and paper anyway.
Find a guy who writes. You’ll find him just outside a library. He’ll like the idea of being outside, on the verge of a thousand worlds, a few steps away. He’ll love the idea of being outside, on the brink of one world, a few carefully placed letters away.
Or he will be inside a café. He doesn’t care whether it’s boutique or Gloria Jeans, moodily or well lit, though he likes it there especially when it’s raining. He will be the one with a notebook in one hand, pen in the other,

8. What are your favorite non-anime TV shows?

Seeing as I already kind of listed a few, I'll tell you my favourite animated shows. There are two, and they are Adventure Time and Bob's Burgers. I love them both. A lot.

9. What are the things you wish you could draw better?

Uh, everything? I can't really draw, so...

10. Summer or winter?

Both? Neither? I prefer spring and autumn, but if I had to choose, I'd guess I'd go with winter. It doesn't snow where I live, so it's not too cold, but you can always put on more layers. There are only so many layers you can take off in summer. (Then again, ask me in my winter, and I might say summer!)

11. Rain or Sun?

Rain. Not pouring down, though. Just drizzling. But then also sun. Both, I guess? I don't know. I'll take each day as it comes.

12. What's your favorite type of music?

I'd guess you'd call my favourite genre alternative rock or soft rock, I guess. Not really sure. I listen to a lot of stuff (80s, 90s, 00s and even a lot of contemporary 'hits'). Not a massive fan of rap, and really don't like techno, but I can appreciate its appeal for others.

13. PC or Mac

I'm writing this on a Mac, so I guess I'd have to go with a Mac...or it might catch on. I kind of want to stay on my laptop's good side.

14. Anime or Manga?

Neither. Both. Each have their own value, but neither have been something I'm particularly interested in.

15. Coke or Pepsi?

Depends on the mood I'm in. Pepsi's sweeter, but sometimes I crave post-mix Coke (like, the kind you get from McDonald's or a club or whatever). I don't know.

16. Read or TV?

Read, and then TV, and then more reading.

17. How many hours a day do you spend on dA?

Barely one, most days. Don't really have the time at the moment. Wish I could spare more, but it's just not an option at this point in time.

18. Name a talent.

Flying. Invisibility. Telekinesis... where is this going?

19. Flash or traditional cartoons?

Whichever ways tells the story the best way.

20. What is your favorite fast food restaurant?

Again, depends on the mood I'm in. KFC has pretty good chips, and I love their Krushers.

21. What are your top 3 favorite books (no mangas)?

Wow, top three? Way to make it mega-difficult! In no particular order:
- Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
- How to be both by Ali Smith
- As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner

22. Wii or PlayStation?

PlayStation, I guess, though I don't really play much of either (or at all).

23. Name 3 of your favorite bands/singers.

Okay, see, this is phrased better. They might not be my top three, but they are three of my favourite: The Kooks, Maroon 5 and No Doubt.

25. Do you like Denny's?

We don't have it in Australia (at least, to my knowledge), so I will refrain from giving a negative or affirmative.

26. What is your favorite smiley(SSSSSSSS)?

What's with all the S's? Hm, probably :D because it's easy to type and is a good representation of how I'm feeling most of the time.

27. What is your favorite type of pie?

Savoury or sweet? Probably beef/chicken and mushroom pie, and apple pie.

28. Have you ever stayed up for 24 hours?

I think close to, but I don't think I've ever stayed up for a full 24 hours. I need my sleep too much!

29. Do you go on dA a lot?

I check my messages once a day or every two days, but might not be active beyond that for a week or two at a time.

30. Are you a member on any other sites besides DA?

Facebook, tumblr...and I think that's it.

31. Do you cosplay?

Nope—maybe one day: it looks like a lot of fun.

32. Fruits or sweets?

I should probably say fruits, but the truth would be closer to sweets.

33. Buttered, plain, or salted popcorn?

Not a massive fan of popcorn (except for the way my friend Withoutthei makes it: a glorious toffee-like concoction), but I guess I'd go with buttered. Or salted...

34. Have you skipped school?

Only swimming/athletics carnivals. Not really my scene.

35. Have you been on a plane?

I've been on six planes (two to Fiji and back, one to China, two Chinese domestic flights, and one back to Australia from Hong Kong).

36. Have you swam in an ocean?

Yep! I think it's the Pacific Ocean...or does it stop being an ocean if it's a sea? I'm not really sure how that all works.

37. Have you been ice skating?

Only indoors, a few times. I'm not very good (inevitably, I will end up with a bruised bum by the end of it).

38. Favorite sport?

Noooot really a sporty kind of person. None?

39. Ever been on TV?

Don't think so. Maybe one day when I'm a super famous author. :P

40. Favorite salad and dressing?

I don't know what it's called, but my mum makes a pretty good salad with all good things and some nuts and cranberries, and it tastes delicious with ranch dressing.

41. What do you do to relax?

Read, watch TV, sleep/snooze, listen to music.

42. What is the last film you saw in the theater?

I work in a cinema, so I see lots of bits of films, but the last full film I actually saw was Paper Planes, an Australian one that came out recently. It's alright. I really want to see Kingsman though! Looks great!

43. Favorite Sandwich?

Don't really have a favourite...maybe salad and ham?

44. If you could go anywhere in the world…

Everywhere! I would go everywhere! But Europe is very high on my to-see list...I'm not sure how I'm going to narrow down which countries I want to see though. They all look amazing!

45. Favorite time of the day?

Evening—especially those long, summery ones that just seem to stretch out for hours.

46. What did you want to be when you were little?

I've always wanted to be a writer, ever since I was little. Heck, I still want to be a writer! Here's hoping!

47. What do you want to be now?

Oh, didn't read this question. A...writer?

48. If you could eat with one person, who would it be?

Um...I'd probably pick William Faulkner's brains on writing and such. Any author, really.

49. What character would you hate to be stuck in a room with?

Going with a theme here, Darl from William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying. It's hard to say why without giving it away, but if you've read the novel, you'll understand.

50. When is your birthday?

25th July :)

51. Favorite type of ice cream?

I like most ice-cream, particularly the nuttier flavours, but right now I'm craving peppermint choc-chip.

52. Last book you read?

I finished Fight Club by Chuck Pahlaniuk the other week, for uni.

53. Which store would you max out a credit card at?

QBD or Dymocks (both bookstores).

54. Do you buy / sell / both on eBay?

Nope.

55. What is the most annoying thing people ask you?

I don't know. Most people ask me things that they are genuinely curious about, and how can I be annoyed by curiosity?
Actually, maybe I do know. Whenever my mum asks me, "Do you want to...?" when she's really telling me to do something. No, I don't want to vacuum, but if you want me to, I will.

56. Favorite all time movie?

Nope. Too hard. Don't even know where to begin.

57. What was your favorite show when you were a kid?

When I was really little, I loved loved loved Thomas the Tank Engine. Still have a soft spot for steam trains.

58. What are you listening to right now?

Nothing.

59. What is the last thing you ate?

A ham and cheese croissant.

60. If you were a crayon what color would you be?

A deep, verdant green.

61. What is the first thing you notice about another person?

I don't know, maybe their voice? I think it differs from person to person, where and when and how I meet them, et cet.

62. Favorite sport to play?

None, really. Maybe touch footy with friends or something.

63. Favorite Day of the Year?

Don't have one. Just take each day as it comes.

64. Hugs or Kisses?

Don't get me wrong, I love kisses, but I love hugs more. All the cuddles!

65. Vanilla or Chocolate?

Both? Why are they mutually exclusive? I suppose if I had to pick one, I'd go vanilla.

66. Favorite Board Game?

Probably Balderdash or Trivial Pursuit. I'll play basically any board/card game though.

67. Favorite smells?

Petrichor, freshly mown grass, earth, vanilla, old books, the beach...

68. What inspires you?

The goodness of humanity, and, I suppose, its wickedness as well. Humanity in general, let's say.

69. Do you have any piercings?

Nope.

70. How many siblings do you have?

Two sisters and a brother (all younger than me).

71. Bacon Bits or Croutons?

Both.

72. Favorite Day of the Week?

Depends on my work roster :P

73. Favorite phrase?

I'll have a think and get back to you on that one (no, that isn't my answer!).

74. Favorite Restaurant?

There's this really nice Thai place, local, that is just delicious (it's called Saam's).

75. Favorite animal?

Too many to choose from! I'd love a pet hedgehog, if you could get them in Australia, but I also wouldn't mind a pet rat. They're so intelligent.

76. Favorite thing to do outside?

Sunbake and read. Or swim. Or just go for a walk.

77. Favorite thing to do when it's raining?

Go for a walk. Read by the window. Just listen. I love the rain.

78. Favorite Disney character?

Maybe Roger from 101 Dalmatians. Not sure though.

79. Do you like coffee? If so, what is your favorite brand?

Yeah, I do. Don't really mind what brand. Whichever one the blessed coffee shops use.

80. Tag 6 people.

Do I have to? Let's lie and say I did. If you want to do all 80 questions, then please, feel free to! You can pretend I tagged you, and then I can edit this and retroactively tag you. How's that sound? No pressure, no pain!

I park parallel to the gutter, turn the car off, and sit a moment. The engine ticks slowly cool and I watch a couple of cars pass by me and find spaces further down the street. My car is comfortable and quiet and I have forty-five minutes to kill before I should head to class. I pull the lever on the side of my seat so I can lounge back as though I am in Dad’s armchair at home.

It is overcast and the sun has only been out for maybe two hours. Everything looks greyer.

From my new vantage point, I can see a construction site about thirty metres in front of me. I wonder what they’re building—it looks very square, and as though it will be tall. Maybe a block of flats, but who am I to know? Flats would make sense. It’s uni students living here, mainly. House sharing and renting from folks who make money off the fact that people will pay more to be able to wake up later and get home earlier. Flats will mean more people in the same amount of space, which equals more money. Flats would make sense.

Movement on the second floor catches my eye. A portly man is waving his arms about. He looks like Dad. He pauses, takes off his hardhat and wipes his brow. He looks angry. Scaffolding stretches up past him, blocking the view of whatever is around him. He is framed, as though in a television screen. He is too far away for me to hear anything. The grey light makes me feel as though I am looking at something almost black and white. Mildly bemused, I feel like Dad in his armchair watching one of his old films. All I need is a beer slick with condensation.

The man has replaced his hardhat and is now gesticulating at someone I can’t see. I could probably crane my neck to see around the scaffolding, but I like it like this. More mysterious. The man takes off his hardhat again so he can rub his sleeve against his forehead, but does not replace it. This worries me slightly, but I’m sure he knows what he’s doing. He looks like he’s in charge. Maybe he’s going off at one of his workers. Probably an apprentice.

Or a son.

Maybe the other workers are pretending not to notice, hoping the worker can leave with his humility at least partially intact. Though, if it’s the angry man’s son, there’s no chance of that. He can’t escape the man’s disapproval at home if this is how he’s treated at work.

He should go to uni or TAFE, move into a different field of expertise, one his father knows little to nothing about, one he can talk about at family dos without fear of being interrupted by a man who thinks he knows everything, who can’t bear being smaller than anyone else, a man who thinks it’s his God-given right to belittle everyone else, to ignore everyone else, a man who is such an arrogant prick that he thinks his son wants to be like him, when in fact it’s the exact opposite…

I close my eyes and take a deep breath. Time to go. Killing time at the coffee shop near my classroom is suddenly much more appealing.

I've been quite absent for a while—apologies! You know how life gets.

Here's a little something from the vault. Please feel free to make any comments or criticisms.

I want to live in a sprawling house at the top of a mountain, where I can watch the sun sink below and then float to the surface of the sky, the air dusky and hazy but still somehow so clear.

I want to watch storms play with trees like twigs, crack lightning like whips to make the bruised clots of clouds thunder by like scared stallions. I want to hold you closer to me, let the candles be our stars tonight as the rain begins to rush down.

I want to let afternoon meander into evening while I lay with you in the hammock in our backyard, let it swing gently in the breeze, the only sound nature: no cars, no television, just you and me and life. It will be night suddenly, cold and crisp and effervescent, and as you stare at the stars, I will stare at you (because you are my star).

I want to fill our sprawling house with children and grandchildren. I want to create with you, to try to make someone else so I can hope they feel the feelings I feel with you.

I want to go on adventures with you—no, I want you to be the adventure I go on. I want you to be my constant inspiration, my eternally beautiful muse (except you already are). I want to please you, make you happy, make you proud, make you know how I love you, make love.

And in our sprawling house with our tribe of children—and grandchildren—when our lives are too busy to do much more than pass each other in the kitchen or on the stairs or at the front door, when by the time we each can finally climb into bed, we find the other already asleep…when that happens, know that I still love you, know that I will let my fingers trail against your body as we move past each other with too many things on our minds, because I can’t bear to see you and not touch you. We will see each other again, but, until then, let this embrace, let this kiss, speak against the time we have missed.

We will be with each other again. We will grow old together. We will watch sunsets and storms, hear laughter and life: we will know love in all its forms. I love you.

I want to live with you, but only because I could not imagine living without you.

Who. Am. I. That question of identity, of the self’s place in a comparatively narcissistic society – a society which values the essence of being different as desirable, yet which attempts to be different in the same way…ahem. Sorry. I get carried away sometimes.

I’m afraid I don’t really have an answer, except to say that I’m a university student, studying a double degree of Creative Arts (major: Creative Writing) and Arts (major: English Literatures). I love me some learnin'!

And that I’m a nineteen-year-old Christian (feel free to ask me anything, I don't bite!) who is frustrated with the late release dates of most films in Australian cinemas, who also likes to read (but starts many more books than he finishes), and gets irritated when drivers don’t use their indicators. Tut-tut.

And I’m a Grammar Nazi. That is all.

Words are my life. Dreaming is my fuel. Imagination is my sanity. God's love is my motivation.

I'm a special swing admin over at DailyLitRecognition, so please suggest any good literature pieces you see. More information and my guidelines can be found here.
